Today was our first day with the hire car, which turns out to be a pretty black Peugeot. (How’s that for a girly description? It even had the make!) More importantly, the remote locking had a very handy feature for British parking – it also folded the mirrors in. Woo-ah! Possibly the most useful aspect of this was the ability to tell at a distance whether the car had been, in fact, locked. Saved us a great deal of walking! It also had automatic windscreen wipers and headlights, and was automatic, so basically all we had to do was steer according to what our satellite navigator told us and conquer the British roads!

After a night on Matt’s surprisingly comfortable couch, the three of us made a moderately early start powered by Vegemite toast (Matt’s an Aussie in Exile) and checked the guide book for Stuff On The Way To Brecon.
Leominster was our first stop, at the beginning of the Black and White Village Trail, a collection of small villages filled with vintage Tudor homes. They were everything we’d hoped for, just like a movie eset for a period drama. It’s still not really sunk in that this is just what things are like. She and our host apparently had a great morning catching up and walking in to Cheltenham to see the race track, the ladies college, and the local Swedish cafe. I, however, had an even more wondrous morning waking up at 10am after 12 hours sleep! Yes! I will beat this cold!
It was thus around twelve when we finally hit the road away from Cheltenham and thus it was quickly decided to drop Bath from our itinerary. Sad, but the other two items were both comparatively quick must-sees, and Bath sounded like it would take more time.
